The frown line is the vertical wrinkle between the eyebrows, often appearing as one or two lines in the shape of an “11”. It can make the face look tense, tired or strict, even when you are completely relaxed. In this guide, you will find out how frown lines develop and what helps, including options without Botox.

What is a frown line?

The frown line, known medically as the glabellar line, forms between the eyebrows above the root of the nose. It is a classic expression line: every time you frown, concentrate or squint, two small muscles pull the eyebrows together. Over the years, the fold remains visible even when your face is relaxed.

Why do frown lines develop?

  • Facial expressions: frowning, concentrating and squinting strain the area between the eyebrows many times a day.
  • Screen work: looking at screens for long periods makes many people frown unconsciously.
  • Stress and tension: mental strain is often reflected in a tense forehead.
  • UV light: squinting in bright light intensifies the frown line, and sun accelerates collagen loss.
  • Collagen loss: from the mid-twenties, the skin loses elasticity and can no longer smooth out lines as easily.

Frown lines often appear together with forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet, the other typical expression lines of the upper face.

What helps against frown lines?

1. Skincare with peptides for expression lines

Certain peptides specifically target expression lines and visibly soften them with regular use:

  • Syn-Ake: a synthetic peptide modelled on a peptide found in snake venom. It visibly smooths expression lines.
  • SNAP-8: an octapeptide, part of the MBR SmoothM8 Complex, that also targets expression lines.
  • Cyclopeptide-5 and ChroNoline: support the firmness and structure of the skin.

2. Sun protection and sunglasses

UV light makes you squint and breaks down collagen. Protect your skin every day with our face sunscreen and wear sunglasses in bright light.

3. Become aware of your habits

  • Notice when you frown, for example in front of the screen, and consciously relax your forehead.
  • Have your eyesight checked regularly and wear glasses if you need them.
  • Take regular breaks from screen work.

4. Aesthetic treatments

For pronounced frown lines, dermatologists most often use botulinum toxin (Botox®), which relaxes the muscles for a few months. Hyaluronic acid fillers are also used for deep lines. After such treatments, you will find suitable aftercare in our collection skincare after laser, peels & Botox.

Frown lines without Botox: what really works?

If you prefer not to have injections, a consistent routine with peptides is the gentle alternative. It does not achieve the same effect as an injection, but visibly softens frown lines over weeks, without needles or downtime. You can find out more in our guide Botox alternative.

Frequently asked questions about frown lines

  • Can you get rid of a frown line with a cream?
A deep frown line cannot be removed with a cream. Peptides such as Syn-Ake and SNAP-8 can, however, visibly soften it with regular use and prevent it from deepening.
  • What helps against frown lines without Botox?
A routine with peptide serums such as the Liquid Surgery Serum, a peptide cream and daily sun protection. In addition, consciously relaxing your forehead helps.
  • At what age do frown lines develop?
The first signs often appear in the late twenties or early thirties, especially in people who frown a lot or work at a screen for long periods.
  • Why do I have a frown line even though I am not angry?
The frown line is not caused by anger alone, but by any frowning, for example when concentrating, squinting or under stress.
  • Do men get frown lines too?
Yes, frown lines are particularly common in men. Men will find suitable care in our collection anti-aging cream for men.
